Comparison between a Cascaded H-Bridge and a conventional H-Bridge for a 5kW Grid-tied Solar Inverter

Résumé

In this paper, we present a comparison between two converter topologies for grid-tied solar inverters: the Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter (CHBMLI) and the conventional H-Bridge Inverter for a 5kW solar application on the domestic grid. This work details the choice of power components (transistors and drivers) and passive elements for both topologies based on the same series of design constraints. The reader of this article will find the detailed process for designing a CHBMLI for solar applications. The novelty of the work is to extend the comparison between those well known topologies in order to demonstrate that the advantages of the CHBMLI are not overthrown by its inherent complexity. After the detailed choice of components, the comparison is made in terms of efficiency, size and cost. This work is supported by experimental measurements on a CHBMLI prototype with an operating switching frequency never achieved in the state-of-the-art of this solar converter. We believe that this manuscript is appropriate for publication by MDPI Electronics because it validates the ongoing trend toward multilevel converter for solar applications.
