Design of sustainable geopolymeric matrices for encapsulation of treated radioactive solid organic waste

Résumé

Among radioactive waste generated by nuclear technologies, radioactive solid organic waste have characteristics which make them difficult to manage, in addition to being intrinsically incompatible with the confinement matri-ces traditionally used. In this work, novel geopolymeric matrices have been investigated on a laboratory scale as valid and green alternatives to Portland cement. In fact, they have exclu-sively been obtained from natural materials and recycled industrial by-products precursors to pursue sustainability and target circular economy goals. The addition of pozzolanic industrial by-products to the mixture resulted in matrices fully compliant with the waste acceptance crite-ria and capable of loading at least 20 wt% of ashes from incineration of solid organic waste. Optimal curing conditions and chemical composition were evaluated by compression tests, while waste confinement and thermal stability were preliminarily assessed by leaching tests and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The obtained results confirm the promising properties of the new material for the immobilization of nuclear waste.
