Some Progress Made in Multiscale Analysis, Multiscale Simulation and Multi-Scale Validation in Reactor Thermalhydraulics

Résumé

System thermalhydraulic codes remain the main tool for nuclear reactor design and safety issues. However a number of other tools have significantly progressed and reached sufficient maturity either to solve an issue or to be used in a multiscale approach as part of solution methodology. 3Dmodules of system codes initially devoted to coarse 3D modelling of pressure vessel, can now model PV components with a finer nodalization due to increased computer power. Component codes with porous 3D modelling and CFD in open medium in single phase flow are now able to simulate some flow situations with a good reliability. They may be also coupled to system codes. Two-phase CFD also progressed for some applications including boiling flow and separate phase flow. Pseudo-DNS or LES with interface tracking methods (ITM) can now be used for local analyses of two-phase flow in support of the modeling of more macroscopic tools using upscaling methods. Examples are given in this paper of multiscale coupling and multiscale analyses with an identification of the difficulties encountered and an evaluation of the capabilities. More recently, the concept of multiscale validation was proposed to complement un-sufficient available validation data by small scale simulation tools which are themselves validated in a separate effect way. Two examples are given for core 3D modelling and downcomer mixing in LOCA situations. The paper mainly reports activities performed in a European context within the last twenty years.
