Fifty years of nuclear corrosion: from a pioneer period to a mature industry and science


An overview is given regarding the evolution of the working party 4 on nuclear corrosion and the evolution of the corrosion concepts over the last fifty years. In the first part of the talk, the creation in 1967 of the working party 4 (WP4) on nuclear corrosion inside the European Federation of Corrosion by Henry Coriou and its evolution will be described and related to the development of nuclear industry in Europe. From the pioneer period of the first nuclear reactors to the development of Generation IV reactors, the nuclear corrosion community has had to face many challenges fuel cladding corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and flow accelerated corrosion have been major difficulties for commercial nuclear power plants and led to large research and development programs together with extensive exchanges inside the scientific and technical community where the WP4 played a major role. The activities of the 50-year-old WP4 include workshops and publications (mainly green books of the EFC series) which will be listed. In the second part of the talk, an illustration of the evolution of the concepts in corrosion during these 50 years will be given with what has been called the Coriou effect which named the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of a nickel alloy (Alloy 600) in pure (or primary) water at high temperature. The SCC of Alloy 600 has been observed by Henry Coriou at the end the 50s in pure water at 350DC. Even if these tests were more representative of water reactor conditions than those made in boiling magnesium chloride solutions where Alloy 600 is not susceptible to SCC, nevertheless, Alloy 600 has been used extensively in water reactors up to the 80s. Major components with Alloy 600 like steam generators or pressure vessel heads had to be replaced due to Alloy 600 cracking. Large researches and developments have been made also to use non susceptible or less susceptible alloys like Alloy 800 or Alloy 690.This short review of the 50-year-old WP4 activities is dedicated to all the past members who achieved remarkable progress in corrosion science for the development of nuclear industry.
