              <p>Plastic pollution is a major concern around the world. More than 9.2 billion tons of plastics have been produced since the mid-50’s and less than 8% have been recycled.[1] The current production of these polymers is around 460 Mt/year, and the accumulation of their wastes in environment and their durability cause irreparable damage on the fauna and flora.[2] In this context, chemical recycling that is the depolymerization of plastic materials into monomers or into valuable organic compounds useful for the chemical industry is appealing and has emerged as a long-term sustainable strategy for a circular economy of these matters. [3] After the use of hydrosilanes, our group has considered the use of iodotrimethylsilane (Me3SiI) to convert polyesters into functionalized monomers or value-added compounds.[4] The homogeneous depolymerization of different kinds of polyesters (PCL, PBT, PET, PES, PLA) with excess of this reagent proceeds without catalysts and under relatively mild conditions to selectively afford a variety of silyl esters products and/or reactive acyl iodide with high yields. These monomers could be reintroduced into plastic production as precursors. Further alcoholysis or hydrolysis can also be carried out to obtain valuable esters and acids. The nature of the iodosilane is of importance. Compound SiH2I2 depolymerized PCL into the fully deoxygenated species I(CH2)6I and n-hexane. This new route was successfully applied on the gram-scale depolymerization of a variety of household polyesters and the expected products have been isolated in good yields. [5]</p>
