A Model For Data-Driven Discovery Of Alloys Resistant To Molten Salt Corrosion

Abstract

In the frame of the French initiative DIADEM, the targeted project A-DREAM aims to develop a generic approach to accelerate the discovery of corrosion resistant materials with minimal environmental impact thanks to an integrated approach involving digital design, high throughput synthesis and accelerated materials corrosion assessment. Corrosion in molten salts (specifically molten chlorides) is considered for this development. Molten salt systems can be found in upcoming concentrating solar power (CSP) plants, future nuclear reactors and even in coal power plants. Nonetheless, these media accelerate can lead the to degradation of structural materials, so it is imperative to develop alloys with the highest corrosion resistance while keeping good mechanical properties. Unfortunately, their corrosion performance cannot generally be compared in absolute terms due to the many variables involved in a given setup (temperature, exposition time, composition of the molten salt, salt purity, among others) that are often changed from an experiment to another. In the following, it will be presented a tactic which overcomes these obstacles and accelerates the discovery of potential alloys using artificial intelligence approaches.
