Demonstration trials of a new spent nuclear fuel treatment process using lab-scale pulsed columns
Résumé
An innovative spent nuclear fuel treatment process, based on a new extracting molecule, is under development at CEA. With a view to industrial-scale implementation, the possibility of using this new solvent in pulsed columns is investigated by carrying out trials in small diameter pulsed columns with uranium feed solutions. The three 4 metre high columns that were used constituted a complete extraction cycle consisting of three operations : extraction, selective stripping and uranium back-extraction. The performed tests demonstrate the possibility of implementing the new process in pulsed columns, with satisfactory hydrodynamic behaviour and transfer efficiency. Thus, the development of the process can be carried on, both experimentally and by means of of a CFD simulation.
