Modelling approach to the evolution of physicochemical conditions in deep geological repository: alteration of engineered materials and redox control
Résumé
Along with two benchmark exercises that have been proposed in the previous workshops and that still need converging results from different modelling teams (atmospheric carbonation of concrete components and long term geochemical interactions between glass, iron, and clay), a new exercise is under construction that involves the treatment of non-equilibrium redox reactions and electrochemistry as a result of steel corrosion processes. A rapid update of the results obtained with the first benchmark exercises will be presented also showing the modifications that were made, essentially in the boundary conditions, in order to provide better constraints for the gas reactive diffusion. The topic of the electrochemical treatment of steel corrosion in the context of deep geological repository will also be presented from the angle of the coupling with a corrosion phenomenological model and the redox control in claystones. The discussions may eventually lead to the proposal of a new benchmark exercise.
